“Hello, doctor. This won’t take a minute.” Uh-oh. Alarm bells, and my suspicions confirmed when she waves in my face a “fitness to do a charity parachute jump” certificate. “If you could just sign here, it’s for a good cause . . .” So what could be simpler? After all, only this week I read that a parachuting 84-year-old great-grandmother had raised £3,000 for charity. And what better way to test yourself for osteoporosis – given the national shortage of bone scanners – than jumping 10,000ft and seeing whether you end up concertina’d? My charity-powered prospective parachutist looks at me expectantly. Surely there can’t be a problem? Well, actually, there are quite a few.
