UNIONS trying to save Remploy factories from closure have welcomed a breakthrough after talks with the government. The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions has agreed to extend the consultation period over the proposed closure of 43 sites, including factories in Birkenhead, Aintree and St Helens, until today, when Roger Poole will host a meeting of the two sides.
