When Martin Cowie, Professor of Cardiology at the Royal Brompton Hospital, London, arrived to meet journalists recently his audience was initially less interested than usual in his research papers. Although it later transpired that the research was of fundamental importance, everyone’s attention was grabbed by the professor’s other props: two high-tech forms of pacemaker that are now available in Britain.
