China reports no new cases of Sars

China yesterday reported no new cases of severe acute respiratory syndrome, a milestone in its fight to contain the mysterious virus that has infected at least 5,328 people around the country and killed 334.

Cooking oil that helps dieters to fight fat while frying

A new cooking oil can help the overweight to fight fat while they fry. The product, known as Functional Oil, contains a mix of olive oil, coconut oil and flaxseed oil. Male volunteers who were fed a typical North American diet made with the oil lost an average of 1lb a month. But women who ate the same "greasy spoon" diet - did not lose weight. It did, though, reduce the cholesterol levels of both sexes by up to 13 per cent.

Labour's hypocritical oath: patient, heal thyself

THE Department of Health had another flash of inspiration yesterday. Hazel Blears, the Health Minister, drew herself up portentously, as if revealing the cure for the common cold. “Early diagnosis and early treatment tend to produce better health outcomes for patients,” she declared. To back up this revelation, Nurse Blears (pronounced Bleaaaghhh) gave a stern wag of the finger.

Pig-to-monkey transplants may herald cure for diabetes

Researchers have suppressed diabetes in laboratory monkeys by transplanting pancreatic tissue from pigs, meaning pig transplants could eventually cure childhood diabetes in humans. The monkeys have survived for more than two months without the insulin that had kept them alive.
