The state can provide protection - The Times 19th November 2007

Mick Hume’s article “Don’t you dare steward me” (Nov 16 ) would have been an interesting contribution to the debate on public health had it responded to what the Nuffield Council on Bioethics actually said in its recent report. We do not suggest that treatment should be denied to smokers, or that smoking in the home could or should be banned, or that individual behaviour should be policed. In fact, we explicitly rejected all these ideas.
