Alan Johnson is, by common consent, a genial chap. Certainly he has a knack of putting people at ease, which is something you wouldn't say of all his predecessors as health secretary. On a recent visit to the home of 84-year-old Kathleen Green in Poole, Dorset, she had the family photos out in no time. The minister was accompanying health and social care staff of the local partnership for older people project (Popp) that has been looking after Green, who has a heart condition and lives on her own, to avoid her having to be in hospital. "It's a godsend," she told him.
